Nice article here that extends the discussion about Tell Tale Signs. "Once he burned with revolutionary fervour, songs spilling out of a man in a hurry. Now, at age 67, he's a walking history book of the United States, keeping alive stories and musical styles that might otherwise be forgotten. His work has grace and majesty, and the breadth of his late-career resurgence is better illustrated in this collection than on any of his individual albums."

Sunday News
The following 4CD set is one to consider. It has a decade per disc orientation. Like a Rolling Stone starts off disc one and there are many more hits than misses. Some favorites include Steve Earle, Dave Alvin, The Band, Fairport Convention, Nick Drake, Jackson Browne, Sarah McLachlan, Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, Wilco, etc. etc.
This is a mildly interesting take from the Irish news. "A Playboy magazine interviewer once made the mistake of trying to ask Bob Dylan a serious question -- along the lines of what made him decide to go the singer-songwriter/voice of a generation route. Dylan looks at him from beneath his cowboy hat and, rather than walk out, offers a Sphinx-like answer: "Carelessness."

Behind the Shades
In rereading this excellent biography the rehearsal list of songs was telling. According to Chris Parker on Page 648 the following covers were rehearsed in 1989.
I Can See For Miles - The Who The Who: The Ultimate Collection
You Keep Me Hangin' On - the Vanilla Fudge Psychedelic Sundae: The Best of Vanilla Fudge
When or Where - Rodgers & Hart Songs of America from Another American
Mystery Train - Junior Parker Songs of America from Another American
12 volt March - (cannot identify)
Sweet Dreams of You - Patsy Cline Patsy Cline - The Definitive Collection
Walking After Midnight Volume 1: Walking After Midnight
Little Queen of Spades - Robert Johnson The Complete Recordings
Poison Ivy - The Coasters Poison Ivy
The Blue Ridge Mountains
High School Hop - Jerry Lee Lewis A Half Century of Hits
Mountain of Love - Johnny Rivers Secret Agent Man: The Ultimate Johnny Rivers Anthology 1964-2006
Ring of Fire - Johnny Cash Ring of Fire
Give My Love to Rose -
Love's Made a Fool of You - Buddy Holly Buddy Holly Gold
God Only Knows - the Beach Boys Pet Sounds
Now imagine all these songs, one after the next. Sort of an eclectic mix by any standards. Then you hear Theme Time Radio Hour and it all fits together.

There is a new date at the end of the Canadian tour at Oneonta, NY - Alumni Field House on November 19th. Has been added to Calendar and trying to learn how to add to Maps.
More Uncut
This article is from Jim Dickinson. "I think he’s distrustful of the recording process. He doesn’t give things time to develop in a traditional fashion. He wants the first interpretation he can get of the song. I saw the same thing working with The Rolling Stones, where they were interested in the moment of creation. Keith Richards said, “That’s where the song comes alive, the first performance.” Alex Chilton was the same way."

The Band
The Band offered some of the best music around Dylan. It was melodic, rockin' and thoughtful. Have a listen to the concert. You will not be disappointed. (Tried to keep this all about Dylan but this is too good not to share.)

News on Tuesday
An interesting look at Dylan in the Islands sailing and meeting a local artist Banke Banx - ""He told me he was the captain of Bob Dylan's yacht in the harbor," Banx said. "He asked me to come aboard and bring a few guitars. I went aboard and met Dylan. We started playing and he was very much interested in (Banx's 1977 gospel-tinged reggae ballad) 'Prince of Darkness.' He wanted me to write out the lyrics and chord progression.
"We went for a swim, we went snorkeling, had lunch. In the evening I invited him to my home studio. I had a Tascam (recorder) n my basement. I was always ready to go. He stepped in and started to play my organ. He said, 'Bankie, I like the sound of this thing ('Prince of Darkness') can you record that?' I said, 'Bob, I've already done that.' Then he asked for a reggae bass line. Then a reggae rhythm guitar. Then he wanted some girls to sing backup vocals. I went and got two girls. One of them [Amelia Vanterpool-Kubisch] is now Director of Tourism for Anguilla. He never put his voice on the tape. He just played keyboards and gave us the harmonies."

Mississippi #1 - Tell Tale Signs
Dylan's best song is presented in a simple, sparse, emotive and thrilling version. The lyric doesn't change but he sings in a more world-weary and breathless manner. The accompaniment stays behind the vocal but stepping up when there is room. The Dobro is said to be played by Daniel Lanois and is very tasty. Just read his Wiki entry, quite a CV but not much lately. Maybe need an update. Sounds like an interesting movie to check out. Here Is What Is - Buy Here
The song adds it all up and the answer is a happy ending. Even though our days are numbered, the singer has "nothing but affection for all those who've sailed with him". It is so easy to drop into sarcasm, disappointment and disgust. Life goes on and either it is lived or endured.

This review of the 2 disc set is short but sweet. Writer offers revealing tidbits about most of the songs. Not sure if it is helpful to a buyer. Writer does not mention Dylan's impending visit to his fair city.

Dylan Radio
This internet radio site plays Dylan 7*24 and is wonderful. The only non-music is when Pete, the DJ, reminds listeners to support the effort. Recently he had a fund raiser for a new disk drive. It seems to be a labor of love and offers up rare, hard-to-find, tracks and loads of live recordings.

More Uncut
Working with Dylan - "I really remember recording “Man In The Long Black Coat”. Malcolm was playing a Yamaha DX7 that Brian Eno had mastered – he had all these sounds built in. Brian had come in on the Neville Brothers record and given us a bunch of sounds for the DX7, and one of the sounds was this crickets sound. Actually, on the Neville Brothers’ Yellow Moon record, I’d found this six-storey apartment building on St Charles Avenue where we lived and recorded, and they have these bugs in New Orleans, cicadas, that make this high-pitched sound. When Brian came in with his cricket sounds, he would play this melody, and then these cicada bugs would repeat it back. It became really creepy. He would do it again, and they’d do it again, and he’d make the melody a little harder, and they would follow it, and so we were like, “Brian Eno is communicating with the insects, oh my God.”
No Nobel for Dylan
Interesting blog on his chance for the Lit. Nobel here. "With Bob Dylan, the question is how far you're allowed to stretch your appreciation. Call Bob Dylan America's Greatest Living Songwriter, and you can easily get away with it, without too many arguments. Call Bob Dylan the most important songwriter of the past 50 years and while you might get alternatives thrown out there, few people would call you irrational. But why would it be unfair to call Dylan America's Greatest Living Poet? Why would the intellectual police shut you down for saying he's the country's most important poet of the past 50 years? Is it because he's actually grown rich off of his poetry? Because people of all ages are familiar with it, can quote it, can sing along? Is it because Pulitzer's are "legitimate" awards and Grammys are "illegitimate"? "

Pilly - "Its two discs contain a handful of how-could-he-not-release-that? outtakes (the superb "Dreamin' of You," and "Red River Shore," from the 1997 Time Out of Mind sessions); the first Robert Johnson cover he's released ("32-20 Blues"), plus live cuts, soundtrack songs and alternative versions of songs that reveal them in new light."
Aspen - sort of lightweight guy
"But the two takes here of “Mississippi,” a profound mediation on overcoming loneliness and regret, not only differ markedly from the original album version, but from each other. Each is acoustic and delightful — the first with a shuffling blues feel, the second with a twangy country tone. Dylan’s phrasing and emotion on each take is spell-binding."
Uncut - recommended (gotts grab the issue) - "
When we started recording, Dylan, basically, would just start some kind of a vamp going on the guitar. The whole band was out in the room, in contact with each other, there wasn’t a lot of separation. And Bob has a table in front of him, with pages and pages and pages of lyrics, and he would just start some kind of a thing going on the guitar, and we’d all fall in behind him, and just start jamming. And as soon as he kinda liked what was happening, he’d start picking up lyrics, going through the pages, and just start trying to sing it over whatever we were doing. If he didn’t care for that one after a while, he’d put it down, pick up another page, and start trying something with that. So, literally, we just jammed." (Paul would love this.)

Here are a few worthy news clips from today:
Verve "The same is true with Mississippi. This song previously has been spun as a ballad by Dylan (on Love and Theft) to rock 'n' roll by Sheryl Crow to country by the Dixie Chicks. On Tell Tale Signs, Dylan delivers it both in old-school Robert Johnson-style to something that rolls and flows like a river. It proves just how remarkable this song is. It will age and improve in the same manner Tangled Up in Blue did."
Huffinton Post -There's a junior Dylanologist in our family, and he's been listening harder and longer to some of these songs than I have. In an excited e-mail, he wrote me: "His lyrics are so rhythmic. He'll have a simple walking baseline and then do all the syncopation with verse. And he'll repeat the same line over and over again. But it's not repetitive, because he changes the meter of the phrase subtly each time."
Dylan Daily - Most of The Time - A more subtle version of the OM track. Less-obviously produced with a more rootsy feel (the acoustic guitars are more pronounced). I like this track a lot, Dylan leans into each word as if he means it. A gem.
Last Time Dylan Played Live -a nice listing, by album of where Dyla last played a song live. Saw two of these from Time out of Mind - Cold Irons Bound in Leipzig and Highlands in Columbia, MO.

Riches...
A new Dylan double (for me - triple for others) CD, a new Theme Time Radio Hour (TTRH) on Money. It is a nice position for us to be in.
An Interesting Marketing idea - give your music to NPR so they can stream it for a week. This makes the music easy to obtain, free and ultimately irresistible. Then it goes away. The link is down and if your want to hear it, you have to purchase. How many people bought the music after hearing it on NPR who otherwise would not have opened their wallet? I wonder.
Ah the music, though it takes a while, is sublime. Bob wrangling, cajoling, find the heart, the soul of the song. What an exploration, a discovery. What is the essence of the song? Why does it exist? Why is being sung or listened to? In Chronicles, Dylan talks about losing his way and that the Grateful Dead and specifically Garcia always knew how to find the center of the song.
He seems to find the essence in this music. Rock on Bob.

Every Step Of The Way...
My goal is to provide the 1st step for those looking for info on Bob Dylan. There is a ton of stuff on the web, but finding the quality, and avoiding the junk is a difficult and time consuming task. This will be a way to find info quicker, easier.
It is also the 1st day of the 3rd season of Theme Time Radio Hour and the day after the release of Tell Tale Signs - his amazing new/old record.
There is so much data:
Records
Concerts
Film
Books
Art
Interviews
News
Blogs
Radio
and more. Each of these areas will be detailed and explored here. It is great to be alive while Dylan is making art. Lucky us.
